So, I many not be the voice of God, nor can I become a disembodied hand on your wall, but TAKE THE DOG.

Here's why:

1. Dogs need packs. The bigger the pack, the healthier the dog.

2. It's not double work or time. When dogs have a pal, they entertain themselves much better.

3. Yeah, the financial obligation is higher, but a little planning and a little impounding makes it manageable.

4. You neighbors want you to have the dog. They will be able to feel peace knowing their beloved is in good hands.

5. Face it, you want the pup.

6. You already know the dog's habits and temperament. You already know this one will blend right into the family.

7. You may not have seen the eclipse, but this gift of canine persuasion is just as much a miracle.

Thank you for this S.E. I think you have given me a new viewpoint that will be most helpful. Seeing that life is a constant revelation, a mostly slow motion apocalypse full of daily wonder and choices. We should look forward to the offering and get on with it I think.

“The Moon covers the Sun, the clouds cover it all…is it an apocalypse if you can’t see it?”

🤣 Lots of Truth and Fun is in your question.

The eclipse is a natural thing, and was very overhyped this time, perhaps to take our attention off of some more important events. (The last one didn't get near this amount of attention.)

I was chopping brambles and during the near total ecclipse, stopped to record how the cows reacted. They were totally unimpressed.

Don't fret or plan too much about dog adopting. Since you have 1, you're already doing the work. 100% of our pets arrived unbidden, or were foisted on the kids and brought home. They haven't gotten super high class vet care, just bare necessities, but overall have done a lot better than they would have without us.

Come to think of it, the Creator planned the kids more than we did, and they're doing alright too.

I found a way to share a couple eclipse pics with you, or anyone else who wants to see, https://substack.com/@weedom1/note/c-53692287 by restacking in notes.

What a lovely post.

Also, get the dog. My husband and I had the same thing going on last year about adopting another cat. You will not regret adopting the dog, and it will put an end to all your fretting and fussing. See: All the things @Stephanie Loomis says.

I was apparently in the one spot in Knoxville that didn't see a lick, and we had 86% coverage. I feel this.

I love sitting with your work and just reading it closely to see how I'm moved each time I read it. The decision about the dog is difficult but honestly, love finds a way to make the decision all worthwhile. I love your description of the apocalypse being like a lantern held in a trembling hand; interesting how we, limited by our own human resources, really want to know the unknowable. Thanks again, S.E. for a wonderful piece to ponder.

In January, we decided our adopted, 9-month-old cat Maxine would benefit from a companion. What’s one more cat? we said.

One more cat that has the personality of our new kitty Peanut is like having a cat, a dog, a goat, and 16 horses in your house. There are days I wonder if it was such a good idea (like when I find a flip-flop chewed to smitereens or when Maxine loses her everlovin’ mind because he just won’t stop pouncing on her when he wants to play).

Also, we wouldn’t trade the chaos for anything in the world. It’s harder, yes, but so rewarding. Get the dog. (I told myself I wasn’t going to tell you what to do, but here I am, not regretting it.)

Oh, my - your post does have the sense of the inevitable: the dog, yes! But you really do get to make the decision. And it's almost never easy and never straightforward, though afterwards, when you've decided, whichever way it goes, you'll wonder why (again) all the fuss about it. I'm writing more to myself than to you :). Best to you!
