You’re the second person I’ve seen use the fast food comparison. Another writer I admire just shared a video about content gluttony, mindlessly consuming media rather than thoughtfully watching, listening, and reading. Interesting stuff!
"As I read one poem every day, I am reminded of the vastness of the human story contained in the tiny space between the lines." What a beautiful practice!
I so relate to this. For the first several years I started writing it was all done out of grief, so all I did was focus on producing material for as much as an emotional outlet than I did actual marketable content. I didn’t read much else, either.
I’ve since changed that and it’s been a game changer for me personally. It’s been great to connect with others who have similar experiences. It’s not only helped me expand the scope of what I write about, but provided a useful healing outlet as well.
This is so beautiful. It’s uncanny that I came across this. My oldest child was trying to understand how people can do such cruel things to each other and, trying to help her make sense, I told her about losing sight of other people’s divine spark and dehumanizing them. But you’ve said it better than I did. And I love your breaking down of genius. Thank you for these beautiful thoughts.
This is beautiful and so inspiring. I've been hoping to get into the habit of writing more poetry, so you have inspired me to try writing a couple lines each day. Thank you :)
Sally, reading a poem a day is a nourishing practice, agreed. And thank you for the Collins recommendation, I've never read Picnic, Lightning. I'm intrigued.
The Greek word poiema that we translate as 'poem' literally means "a thing that is made," and you are correct--we are all God's made thing. That is what is missing when we dehumanize each other and when computers begin their counterfeit attempts.
It's work like yours that reminds us of the heart of God. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing. The next revelation is to recognize that there is no “other.” It is only us.
Just beautiful, reflective and kind… genius!

Great piece!
