I will go out and sow the seed, In the name of the One who gives it growth. I will face into the wind, and throw a gracious handful on high, in trust that God will make it fall on fertile earth, where dew and rain will make it swell. The dew will come down to welcome, each seed that lies in sleep. Every seed will take root in the earth, as the Ruler of the elements desires. Green sprouts will come forth with the dew. They will inhale life from the soft wind. By God's grace the earth produces: first the stalk, then the ear, then the full grain shall appear. Adapted from the Carmina Gadelica (a book of old Celtic prayers)
The ancient Celts understood that the seasonal cycle was a holy pattern, something to be experienced not only in the exterior world, but deep inside our souls, as well.
Spring was a time of surprise when seeds hidden away in the earth would rise to life and form the foundation for the harvest in autumn. But the symbolism of hidden seeds can take on new meaning, if we let it.
We scatter prayers like seeds throughout our lives, especially in the most trying situations we face. When they land, we don’t know what has landed in fertile soil, and whether any of those prayers will take root and grow.
But the God Who Grows sees where each seed of prayer falls, and He knows the fate of each.
No matter what spring looks like in our unique regions, lives, and situations, each of us has unexpected joys, blessings, gifts, and miracles hidden away, waiting for the warmth of God’s grace to make them rise to life. This is fully out of our control. What a painful beauty it is to be out of control!
All we can do is wait and watch, believing that it’s possible as we go about our daily lives to look down and see the green growth of a prayer we scattered months before suddenly rising to life, reaching for the sun.
